This particular masterpiece of a silver-haired bat with the most hilarious face in the animal kingdom was found in an 1842 book about the wildlife of New York. It occupies the middle of the page, between two much more detailed renderings of full bat bodies; whether it's an actual part of the book or an added doodle is honestly kind of hard to tell. Either way, it's truly the pinnacle of illustrative achievement.
