The attacks quickly induced a general state of panic and hysteria, with the French government offering bounties and sending soldiers and hunters to track the beast down, and its reign of terror soon became a legend that's lived even into the modern day. Though a likely culprit (a large wolf or wolf-dog) was finally found and the killings ended, mysteries around the beast still remain.
