Shrikes, sometimes called "butcherbirds," are well known for two things: being adorable and committing gruesome murders. These cute feathered friends have a taste for meat, but lack the hooked beaks and tearing talons of their raptor brethren. So they instead impale their prey on sharp objects like thorns, branches, and barbed wire. You may feel a sense of foreboding entering a shrike's territory, where the branches may be strewn with the dangling remains of prey saved for a later meal.
